Some highlights of the session MMfD conducted with Independent News Urdu Newsroom in Islamabad, which included journalists from Urdu news and Arab news as well. The session was based on our new module, "Beyond Fact-Checking: Investigating Political Disinformation" to address rampant misinformation. MMfD is taking substantial steps to help journalists across the country deal with the information disorder, especially in countering organized disinformation.With the General Elections approaching in 2023, there has been an observed increase in political misinformation, and so MMfD has designed these training sessions to assist newsrooms in sourcing credible information through diverse platforms and go beyond traditional fact-checks to investigate organized disinformation. Exciting news! Our research report, "Fact Checking and Verification: Navigating the Misinformation Landscape in Pakistani Newsrooms and Beyond" authored by Momina Mindeel is out now. This study explores the current fact-checking systems and information verification practices used by journalists and newsrooms in Pakistan, and identifies gaps for improvement. The research also assessed the perception of news consumers in Pakistan regarding the misinformation landscape, their trust in local media outlets, and their actions to tackle misinformation as citizens. Check out our findings and recommendations for enhancing the fact-checking process in Pakistani newsrooms.Key Findings:🔵 69.7% of the journalists surveyed, fact-check their stories themselves, while 7.6% rely on editors/sub-editors 🔵 46.7% of the journalists surveyed, have not received any formal training on fact-checking while 28.6% have access to free or paid fact-checking tools/software🔵 64% of news consumers surveyed, use social media for news, 47% trust it for accuracy.🔵 Women (73%) are more likely to use social media for news. Media Matters for Democracy was founded by a group of journalists geared towards media development and digital rights in Dec 2014. Over the years, after a number of likeminded individuals came on board, we have now become a team of journalists, activists, techies, designers, researchers, and lawyers striving together for a progressive media, communications, and digital spaces.
