General Terms and Conditions for the Media Matters for Democracy’s ‘Citizen Journalism Fellowship Program’

The fellowship program is organised by Media Matters for Democracy (MMFD) and is aimed mainly at supporting the citizen journalists in Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. 

Applications for the fellowship program are open till 15th November 2021. The program is open for all citizen journalists from above mentioned areas who pass the eligibility criteria (individuals and citizen media companies regularly creating and publishing citizen journalism content for digital platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter etc).

Applicants could be creating all types of citizen journalism content including on tourism, sports, health, entertainment and music, politics, and governance issues.

Any individual directly affiliated with MMFD’s team — such as with blood relation — will not be eligible to participate.

The applications for the fellowship program may fall under any of the following Key Result Areas (KRAs):

  1. Developing and implementing strategies to improve the quality of citizen journalism content
  2. Developing and implementing strategies to improve the sustainability and viability of journalism content production operation
  3. Developing and implementing strategies to expand the citizen journalism content production operation

A: To participate in the fellowship contest, eligible individuals and citizen media companies must:

  1. Through the application, explain how support and grant under the fellowship would be potentially utilised to achieve any one or more of Key Result Areas (KRAs) listed above. 
  2. Share a comprehensive workplan (through the short videos) for the successful implementation of the proposed strategy in pursuance of any one (or more) of the KRAs listed above.

B: Registrations are open until 15th November 2021

MMFD will conduct ‘informational sessions’ to answer any questions or queries with regards to the application process which will be announced through MMFD’s social media outlets. 

Please note that any applications received after this deadline will not be considered

C: All work carried out by the successful participants is their own property. 

No individual, organisation or entity other than the registered team can claim prerogatives on the intellectual property developed under the fellowship program. Any prior intellectual property that the fellowship participants bring with them or by which they are linked because of their professional status must be declared to Media Matters for Democracy

D: Selection process

The applications will be selected by a jury comprising of the members of Media Matters for Democracy and external experts based on a selection criteria developed by MMFD.

E: The documents to be submitted are as follows: 

1.  Filled-in registration form 

2. A 1-minute video presenting the concept 

F: Support and grant

Selected fellows will get mentorship in content production and a grant of up to 200,000 PKR to assist in the pursuance of any one or more of the above mentioned KRAs

Rules 

1. In order to be declared a finalist, the selected participant, must meet the following conditions: 

Confirm that he/she meets the eligibility conditions and other requirements of these general terms and conditions. 

Failure to comply with one of the conditions mentioned above or any other condition mentioned in these rules, the selected participant will be disqualified and at the discretion of the organisers, the financial support will be canceled or to the organisers may select another participant in accordance with these general terms and conditions. The same conditions will then remain applicable, making the necessary adaptations, if necessary.

 2. Competition procedures:

Any attempt to sabotage the legitimate conduct of the competition constitutes a violation of civil and criminal laws. If such attempts are made, the MMFD and the Jury reserves the right to reject the participant’s registrations and obtain redress under the law. 

2. Limitation of liability: 

The selected participants release the MMFD and the Jury from all responsibility for damages that may arise from participation in Citizen Journalism Fellowship Program, acceptance and the respective contract. 

The selected participants acknowledge that upon receipt of the contract or a respective letter confirming their successful application, the performance of the obligations related to the selection becomes their sole and exclusive responsibility

3. Modification of the competition: 

MMFD and the Jury reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend, in whole or in part, this competition in the event of an event or any human intervention that may alter or influence the administration, security, impartiality or running of the competition as provided for in these rules cannot be held responsible.
