Media Matters for Democracy’s Digital Media Fellowship Program
Aimed at Creating Inclusive Digital Media Community Spaces
The information ecosystem in Pakistan is dominated by mainstream, national-scale media. This domination of national media creates a gap of representation of communities whose voices are not adequately included in the mainstream. Regional and community media organisations face an array of problems like complex journalistic obstacles, technical disruptions, and above all existential financial challenges. Innovative ideas and a start-up mentality are needed to strengthen media outlets and offer a wider range of quality journalism content to a broader audience in new formats and through new channels. Throughout the world, local and citizen media outlets have developed interesting approaches that can be used everywhere.
Media Matters for Democracy’s Digital Media Fellowship Program is an initiative to assist Pakistani digital content producers and journalists in sustaining their digital media outlets, in order to help them grow and develop into a digital community.
This program is rolled out as an initiative under ‘The Media Lab’, MMFD’s in-house incubator and accelerator for digital media startups.
What do we offer?
We are inviting digital media outlets / startups from all across the country to apply for MMFD’s Digital Media Fellowship Program. A total of 10 digital media outlets / startups will be selected as Fellows and will be offered a wide range of support to make the media outlets/start-ups more sustainable, financially resilient, and potentially scaleable.
The 10 selected Fellows (digital media outlets / startups) will be offered:
- Hands-on support from experts in developing editorial, business development, and design strategies for digital media outlets / startups, which will be aimed at helping them grow as digital entities,
2. Technical training programs which will help them in creating, publishing, and monetising their content better,
3. Financial support (of up to 400,000 PKR) for the implementation of editorial, business development, and design strategies developed under this Fellowship program,
4. Fellows (digital media outlets / startups) based in Islamabad and Karachi will also have full access to MMFD’s production studio.
How does it work?
Digital media outlets / startups from all across the country are invited to apply for this program. From the applications submitted to MMFD, a total of 10 digital media outlets / startups will be invited to become a Fellow through a decision made by a Jury appointed by MMFD, comprising of members from within MMFD’s team and external experts.
The applications will remain open till 1st December 2021.
Who can apply?
This program is available for all Pakistani citizens, creating content from within Pakistan, and open for all national and regional digital media outlets, media startups, or community media platforms promoting key journalistic values, and producing quality journalism content.
You can apply if:
- You are a digital content producer, producing and publishing journalistic content (on a wide range of themes including environment, health, etc) through your own (individual led) digital media outlet
2. You lead or are a part of a digital media outlet / startup, and regularly create and publish quality journalism content. In this case, the application will be submitted on behalf of the digital media outlet.
Preference will be given to women-led digital media outlets and community platforms, especially from within the marginalised section(s).
How to apply?
All interested applicants are requested to send in their applications by filling a Google Form linked below. The Google Form also requires the applicants to upload a 1-minute video to share the details of their outlet, the key values that drive their content production, and where they want to see themselves in the next 5 years.

قومی اور علاقائی سطح پر میڈیا اداروں کو متعدد مسائل کا سامنا ہے، جن میں صحافیانہ رکاوٹوں، ٹیکنیکل مسائل اور سب سے بڑھ کر اپنے وجود کو برقرار رکھنے میں درپیش مالی مسائل شامل ہیں۔عصرِ حاضر میں نئے تخلیقی خیالات اور طریقوں سے کام کرنے کے رجحانات کے ذریعے میڈیا ہائوسز کو مضبوط کرنے کی ضرورت ہے تاکہ عوام کی نئے فارمیٹ اور چینلز کے ذریعے معیاری صحافت تک رسائی ممکن بنائی جا سکے۔

طریقے دریافت کئے ہیں، ہماری کوشش ہے کہ مجوزہ فیلوشپ کے ذریعے ڈیجیٹل میڈیا پیلٹ فارمز کو نئے زاویوں پر پروان چڑھایا جائے۔
مزکورہ پروگرام کا انعقاد کے میڈیا لیب کے تحت کیا جا رہا، جو ڈیجیٹل میڈیا سٹارٹ اپس کے لیئے میڈیا میٹرز فار ڈیموکریسی کا اِن ہاؤس انکیوبیٹر ہے۔
ہم کیا آفر کر رہے ہیں؟
منتخب کردہ مقامی اور سٹیزن میڈیا پلیٹ فارمز کو کاروباری، ادارتی، اور ڈیزائن کے حوالے سے پالیسی بنا کر دی جائے گی جس سے مزکورہ پلیٹ فارمز کو ادارتی طور پر مضبوط اور منافع بخش بنایا جائے گا۔ ان پالیسیوں کے ذریعے انہیں مستقبل سے چیلینجز سے نبرد آزما ہونے کے گُر بھی سکھائے جائیں گے۔ہم نے ملک بھر سے ڈیجیٹل میڈیا آؤٹ لیٹس اور سٹارٹ اپس کی جانب سے درخواستیں طلب کی ہیں، جن میں سے 10 منتخب پلیٹ فارمز کو تربیت اور حمایت فراہم کی جائے گی اور انہیں معاشی طور پر مضبوط اور بڑھوتری کے لئے استعداد میں اضافہ کیا جائے گا۔
منتخب کردہ پلیٹ فارمز کو مندرجہ ذیل مراعات حاصل ہوں گی
ماہرین کی جانب سے ادارتی، کاروباری اور ڈیزائن کی حکمت عملی بنا کر دینا، جس سے سٹارٹ اپس کو بطور ڈیجیٹل پلیٹ فارم پروان چڑھنے میں مدد ملے گی۔ ان کے مواد کو بہتر بنانے اور اس سے پیسہ کمانے کے مواقع پہچانے کے حوالے سے تکنیکی تربیت کی فراہمی ادارتی پالیسی، کاروباری بڑھوتری اور ڈیزائن حکمت عملی پر عملدرآمد یقینی بنانے کے لیئے 400,000 روپے تک کی امدادی رقم کی فراہمی جبکہ کراچی اور اسلام آباد کے سٹارٹ اپس کو میڈیا لیب کے سٹوڈیوز تک رسائی حاصل ہوگی۔
انتخاب کا طریقہ کار کیا ہے؟
قومی اور علاقائی سطح کے تمام میڈیا آؤٹ لیٹس اس فیلوشپ کے حصول کے لئے درخواست جمع کروا سکتے ہیں۔ ماہرین کی جانب سے وصول شدہ درخواستوں میں سے 10 بہترین پلیٹ فارمز کا انتخاب کیا جائے گا۔
درخواستیں جمع کروانے کی آخری تاریخ یکم دسمبر، 2021 ہے۔
کون درخواست دے سکتا ہے؟
اس پروگرام میں تمام پاکستانی شہری درخواست دے سکتے ہیں جو پاکستان کے اندر مواد تیار کرتے ہیں۔ یہ پروگرام تمام قومی، علاقائی، ڈیجیٹل میڈیا آوٹ لیٹس،میڈیا سٹارٹ ایس کمیونٹی میڈیا پلیٹ فارمز کے لیے ہے جو اہم صحافتی اقدار کو فروغ دیتا ہے اور معیاری صحافتی مواد تیار کرتا ہے۔
:آپ درخواست دے سکتے ہیں اگر
آپ ڈیجیٹل مواد کے پروڈیوسر ہیں اور آپ انفرادی قیادت میں ڈیجیٹل میڈیا آؤٹ لیٹ کے ذریعے ماحول، صحت سمیت وسیع موضوعات پر صحافتی مواد تیار اور شائع کر رہے ہیں۔
آپ ڈیجیٹل میڈیا آؤٹ لیٹ / سٹارٹ اپ کی قیادت کرتے ہیں یا اس کا حصہ ہیں اور باقاعدگی سے معیاری صحافت کا مواد تخلیق اور شائع کرتے ہیں۔
اس صورت میں درخواست ڈیجیٹل میڈیا آؤٹ لیٹ کی طرف سے جمع کرائی جائے گی۔
خواتین کی زیر قیادت ڈیجیٹل میڈیا آؤٹ لیٹس اور کمیونٹی پلیٹ فارمز کو ترجیح دی جائے گی، خاص طور پر پسماندہ طبقوں کے اندر سے۔
درخواست کیسے دی جائے؟
تمام دلچسپی رکھنے والے افراد سے درخواست کی جاتی ہے کہ وہ نیچے دیئے گئے لنک میں گوگل فارم کو بھر کر اپنی درخواست بھیجیں۔ گوگل فارم میں خواہش رکھنے والے افراد ایک منٹ کی ویڈیو اپ لوڈ کریں ، جس میں وہ اپنے آوٹ لیٹ کی تفصیلات، ان کے مواد کی تیاری کو آگے بڑھانے کے لیے اہم اقدار بتائیں اور اگلے پانچ سال میں وہ خود کو کہاں دیکھنا چاہتے ہیں۔
