General Terms and Conditions for the Media Matters for Democracy’s ‘MediaHack – A Hackathon for Media Sustainability and Viability in Pakistan’
MediaHack is organised by Media Matters for Democracy (MMFD) and is aimed mainly at supporting entrepreneurial journalists working on independent media outlets in order to make their practices more sustainable and viable.
Applications for MediaHack are open till 25th May 2022. The program is open for all Pakistani entrepreneurial journalists working and operating in Pakistan.
Independent media outlets may include websites, podcasts, Youtube channels and/or social media blogs. Your media outlet must be following and adhering to the fundamental principles and ethics of journalism.
Please note: If more than one individual from the same independent media organization wishes to apply, applications will still be considered and assessed on an individual basis. Any individual directly affiliated with MMFD’s team — such as with blood relations — will not be eligible to participate.
A: To participate in the fellowship contest, eligible individuals must:
- Fill in the application form in full, and,
- Share a comprehensive video as defined in the application form
B: Registrations are open until 25th May 2022.
MMFD will conduct ‘informational sessions’ to answer any questions or queries with regards to the application process which will be announced through MMFD’s social media outlets.
Please make sure you are readily available on the contact details provided in your applications – MMFD may get in touch with participants during the screening process if any further information is required to effectively assess applications.
Please note that any applications received after this deadline will not be considered.
C: All work carried out by the successful participants is their own property.
No individual, organisation, or entity other than the registered team can claim prerogatives on the intellectual property developed under MediaHack. Any prior intellectual property that the participants bring with them or by which they are linked because of their professional status must be declared to Media Matters for Democracy
D: Selection process
The applications will be assessed based on a competitive selection matrix, by a jury composed of members of Media Matters for Democracy and external experts based on selection criteria developed by MMFD.
E: The documents to be submitted are as follows:
- Filled-in application form
- A 2-minute video profile as defined in the form
F: Number of Shortlisted Participants and winners
MMFD will announce the shortlisted participants who will be invited to participate in MediaHack by Saturday 28th May 2022. Participants must confirm their participation in the defined time limit to assure their presence – so that in case a participant is unable to attend, their slot may be given to a different application. MediaHack event dates are 31st May to 3rd June 2022. If a participant fails to do so, their slot will automatically be canceled.
G: Support and Grants
Of the shortlisted participants, 4 winners will be announced at the end of the event, who will be receiving grant support up to PKR 500,000 to execute and implement their pitches over a defined period of time. They will do so through a 3-month long mentorship program.
Rules
- In order to be declared a finalist, the selected participant must meet the following conditions:
Confirm that he/she meets the eligibility conditions and other requirements of these general terms and conditions.
Failure to comply with one of the conditions mentioned above or any other condition mentioned in these rules, the selected participant will be disqualified and at the discretion of the organisers, the financial support will be canceled, or to the organisers may select another participant in accordance with these general terms and conditions. The same conditions will then remain applicable, making the necessary adaptations, if necessary.
- Competition procedures:
Any attempt to sabotage the legitimate conduct of the competition constitutes a violation of civil and criminal laws. If such attempts are made, the MMFD and the Jury reserves the right to reject the participant’s registrations and obtain redress under the law.
3. Limitation of liability:
The selected participants release MMFD and the Jury from all responsibility for damages that may arise from participation in MediaHack, acceptance, and the respective contract.
The applicant is solely responsible for the oversight of its own content, and MMFD will bear no responsibility for any damages that may arise for whatever reason.
4. Modification of the competition:
MMFD and the Jury reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend, in whole or in part, this competition in the event of an event or any human intervention that may alter or influence the administration, security, impartiality or running of the competition as provided for in these rules cannot be held responsible.
