Islamabad, 12 August 2016: Muhafiz, Pakistan’s first digital threat reporting system for journalists and bloggers is live in Peshawar.
Developed by Media Matters for Democracy and Code for Pakistan with support from UNESCO and Foundation Open Society Institute, Muhafiz is an app combined with a web-portal and seeks to streamline the threat reporting practices of media practitioners. Muhafiz is linked with local law-enforcement, local and national union office holders and international support groups (such as Rory Peck Trust) through a 24×7 help-desk. Muhafiz is being piloted in Peshawar and Islamabad in partnership with Peshawar Press Club with select group of 30 media practitioners. Muhafiz app is developed by Code for Pakistan.
Media Matters for Democracy and Code for Pakistan hosted a day-long orientation session in Peshawar to give Muhafiz access to media practitioners nominated by Peshawar Press Club. The 3-month long pilot aims to ground-test Muhafiz app in Peshawar, and learn from the experience before going national. In Phase II, Muhafiz would be made available to 1000 journalists from Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar.
