Media Matters for Democracy announces Awam, a citizen journalism mobile phone application and a web-portal. Beta version to launch soon.

Media Matters for Democracy announces the successful development of the POC [proof of concept] of Awam, a mobile phone application which aims to gather crowdsourced, credible citizen journalism content and showcase it through a centralised web-portal with an easy-search feature [users can filter the content based on cities or provinces].

MMFD has been working on this concept for a while and but has only recently developed a POC. First-beta is expected to launch in a months time.

Awam is designed to further the concept of citizen journalism and it allows the users to report their local ‘news’ — issues that directly affect their community or other communities, bad governance, and corruption for instance — through a broadcast news-like template using the mobile phone camera, which is then hosted on an online platform www.awam.news.
